Despite initial concerns from negative reviews, this diner had a surprisingly positive experience at Spice of Bruerne. They praised the smart decor, attentive staff, and prompt service, especially highlighting the very tasty and well-cooked food, from poppadoms and starters to the "pretty much perfect" main courses. Overall, it was a fantastic meal in a great canal-side location, leading to a strong recommendation and plans to return.

Spice of Bruerne Review – July 2023

I have to say I was a bit concerned about the prospect of eating at this restaurant as I have heard

various negative comments recently, from both people on the canal and also on trip adviser.

Initial observations in the restaurant are very positive, the decoration is smart and we think it’s had a

revamp since we last visited.

Drinks and popadoms were ordered and both arrived quickly.

My only observation at this point is that there appeared to be only one person with the authority to

take orders.

So I was expecting to be unimpressed but actually exactly the opposite was true. Dips and

poppadums were good with excellent lime pickle. Starters arrived promptly and my four onion

bhajees were hot and very tasty. Quite a few of the members had prawn Puri, which while perhaps

not as large as portions elsewhere, apparently was very tasty and flavoursome.

Main dishes also arrived pretty quickly and were a real highlight. I had chicken dhansak which was

pretty much perfect. Tangy and spicy with really well cooked chicken, not overcooked as many

places would have. Graeme’s lamb methi madras wasn’t quite hot enough and he made a comment

to the waiter who immediately took it away and came back with a much more appropriate spicier

version.

All the staff were very attentive and helpful through the evening and I think they wanted to ensure

that we had a good time.

The restaurant is situated right by top lock at Stoke Bruerne, right on the edge of the canal. So

perhaps a little bit of a trek out from MK to get here but it’s a beautiful location. There are two pubs

close by, the Boat Inn and Navigation Inn.

So overall we had a fantastic meal in a great location, a bit surprising based on the reviews but I have

to say a really good night and we’ll be back again.
