Calcutta Brasserie offers excellent food and good value, despite its celebrity surroundings, with a diverse menu including many fish and chicken options. While the reviewer experienced slow and inattentive service due to their seating location and ordering via tablet was a bit chaotic, food delivery was timely once the order was placed. Overall, it's a strong contender on Stony High Street and worth trying.

Calcutta Brasserie Review - May 2025

Looked forward to this one and the we were not disappointed. The food is excellent, generally on all dishes and its not so expensive as you might think as you look around in its quite celebrious surroundings.

We were placed on a long table to the left as you enter the restaurant. We much prefer to be on the right where both the service and the atmosphere is much better. It’s quite quiet where we were and we often had to attract the waiters attention to get service. Felt a bit like the poor relations, wasn’t that busy and we had booked a week in advance.

There is a smaller choice of lamb dishes on the menu but there is a large choice of fish and seafood. Great for those that prefer it to meat . There is, of course, a large choice of chicken dishes also.

The ordering was a little slow and chaotic due to either the difficulty in using a tablet to take the order or the slowness of it, for whatever reason. However, once the ‘send’ button was pressed the delivery was very timely and pretty much all came together.

Certainly keeps up with the competition along Stony High Street, give it a try.

Positives
  • Nice greeting, drinks ordered quickly
  • Pops and dips ok, had to ask for lime pickle
  • Lollipop Chicken, a popular choice. Good sized portion, tasty hot sauce, excellent value for money
  • Lamb Chops, ok, a bit of a cheesy flavour, maybe the yogurt
  • King Prawn Puree, perfect puree, nicely spiced prawns with great flavour. Top marks for this.
  • Kori Gassi, flavoursome chicken
  • Laal Maas, really good, top curry. Lamb could have, maybe, been slightly more tender
  • Kosha Mangsho, really good, nice level of spice*
  • South India Garlic Chicken, excellent, reasonably hot and tasty
  • Chicken Mango Korma, the mango variety of korma seems to becoming popular. Delicious sweet flavour
  • Onion Bhajee, really good for small size
  • Mushroom Combo if you like mushrooms you will love this
  • Tarka Daal, good texture and great taste
  • Naans and rice all ok
  • Large bottle of Cobra is a very good price compared to other restaurants
Negatives
  • A long table, we always prefer a round one but at least be placed upstairs
  • Dosa, ok but a little bland
  • Naans, sliced into four, some prefer them whole to tear
  • Kingfisher zero, bottle, not very pleasant
  • Toilets remain deficient for a large restaurant
  • Bit slow taking the orders, few technical difficulties with the ‘tablet’
  • Generally, with a bit more customer care it would be hard to beat
Common Curry

More than average prices but still good value for money
